Glacier World
Throughout the whole of Pitztal there are 46 glaciers with a total surface of 35 km². The Mittelbergferner is one of the largest glaciers in surface area in the eastern Alps.
Glaciers arise above the snow line around the summits of the high mountain region. The mass of snow that does not melt is compacted into ice and moves at about 100 m a year down into the valley. The tongue-shaped ice flow, the so-called glacial migration, melts below the snow line and forms a vault-like opening, the glacial mouth, where the glacial stream emanates from. A look in the interior of the ice cave is one of the highpoints of every summer glacier visit. Experienced mountain guides from the
Club Alpine Imst-Pitztal bring you closer to this experience. In winter, the visitor can enjoy the exhilarating thrill of skiing down the valley over the Taschachferner. This is only possible in the company of a skiing instructor, however.
