The Stampfle Mill in Jerzens

Culture, crafts and events in the historic ‘Stampfle’

The historic “Stampfle” in Jerzens is far more than just a mill – it is a place in the Jerzens community that brings people together. Here, the birthplace of innovations such as the unique Tyrolean milk pipeline, the focus today is on shared experiences. Once a week, when the historic mill is set in motion, the whole village is filled with the aroma of freshly baked bread. It is the perfect meeting place to learn traditional skills from local women, to lend a hand or simply to strike up a conversation.

Two rustic wooden huts stand in the middle of a green garden, surrounded by trees. A terrace with wooden tables provides seating and exudes a sense of tranquillity.

The Stampfle

400 years of history in one place

The Stampfle is the oldest mill in Jerzens and has been in operation at its current location since 1582. The name ‘Stampfle’ is derived from the ‘Getreidestampf’, or grain-pounding mechanism. Baking bread together , seeing the grinding mechanism in action and tasting fresh raw milk from the milk pipeline in summer demonstrate how the mill works and the wide range of possibilities it offers. On selected weekends, a farmers’ market brings the village to life.

A rustic room with traditional wooden machinery, a wooden granary and old tools on wooden shelves. Daylight streams through a window onto the wooden floor.
A woman with long hair is standing with her back to the camera in a wood-panelled room, which is separated by a glass wall. Inside, other people are sitting at a table.
A wooden sign bearing the words ‘Fresh Raw Milk’ attached to a concrete wall. The foreground is out of focus, which gives the picture an interesting sense of depth.
A modern kitchen area with a grey stone wall, glass shelves displaying cups and glasses, a black sink and an ornate picture on the wall.
A wood-fired oven with glowing embers, in which several round, unbaked loaves of bread dough are resting on a wooden peel. The loaves are baked deep inside the oven, surrounded by heat.
Crispy, light-brown bread in a white bread basket, resting on a napkin. The crust is uneven and cracked, suggesting a rustic, artisanal production.

The Tanzalm is picturesquely situated on a green alpine meadow in the mountains. Surrounded by tall conifers and flowering meadows, a footpath winds its way up the hillside.

Jerzens Milk Pipeline

How the milk gets from the mountain pasture to the jug

The milk pipeline in Jerzens is a unique underground pipeline in the Alpine region, which transports fresh cow’s milk from the Tanzalm, situated at an altitude of 1,980 metres, directly to the village of Jerzens, 3.5 kilometres away and 900 metres lower down.

The milk is transported from the Tanzalm to the valley via the milk pipeline to Jerzens.
