Valley hiking trail with swiss trac

Start
Mandarfen (1679m)
Finish
Wiese (1462m)
Swiss Trac Tour:The valley hiking trail from Mandarfen to Wiese (ca. 22 km) can be navigated either by electric handbike or sections of it by Swiss-Trac. If you are using an electric handbike, we would advise to start in Mandarfen and take the route out of the valley. The route is overall challenging as it repeatedly features steep inclines and varied terrain. There are several sections through grazing pastures. We would recommend the following sections for Swiss-Trac users:
  • Mandarfen and Neurur (ca. 6 km)
  • Stillebach and Eggenstall (ca. 4 km)
  • Enger and Wiese (ca. 5 km)
You can choose start and end points in any of the villages and hamlets of St Leonhard within these three sections.

Lake Rifflsee

Start
Bottom station Rifflseebahn/Sunna Alm (2290m)
Finish
Bottom station Rifflseebahn/Sunna Alm (2290m)
Swiss Trac Tour: From the car park the valley station of Rifflseebahn gondola is accessed on level ground. Several steps up to the ticket office can be accessed via a short, but steep ramp. Proficient Swiss-Trac users can mange the gradient of the ramp. Please note that railings restrict access to the area outside the ticket office. You will also have to pass through this area in order to access the ground-level toilets around the corner of the building. Please note that these toilets are not suitable for wheelchair users. Access to the gondola is via a second, longer steep ramp. Even Swiss-Trac users would be advised to have someone to assist them for this section. The gondola is accessed via a step and the space between the benches allows for a wheelchair with a maximum width of 60 cm. The Swiss-Trac can be transported in the next gondola with an assisting person. Once at the mountain station, the helpful gondola staff will stop the gondola once again to allow for an easy exit. Immediately after leaving the gondola you can see Lake Rifflsee, a glacial lake nestled in a hollow that features are 3 km long circular route.
Directly next to the mountain station is “Sunna Alm” mountain restaurant. The circular route starts from here and also passes the jetty of the raft ride. The first 500 m are a steep descent and water gullies have to be traversed. Once the path levels off in the coombe of the lake the path is relatively level and well prepared. The second half of the circular trail, from the bridge onwards is more uneven with larger stones. The ascent back up to “Sunna Alm” is quite steep again. It takes approx. 1 hour to complete the route and return to your starting point. Enjoy magnificent views of Lake Rifflsee from the sun terrace of the mountain restaurant. The restaurant area of “Sunna Alm” is very spacious. The toilets are in the basement and cannot be accessed by wheelchair.

Characteristics and Description:
Red Piste – Intermediate ski tour along the ski run
From the starting point at the Gletschersee chair lift base station you keep to the left edge of the ski run (seen from the valley) on ski piste number 36. Right at the start, close to the base station, there is a very tricky narrow section covering about 50 meters. Watch out for oncoming sportspeople. After another 500-meter stretch the ascent route travels along the ski piste number 36. A moderately climbing section in the lower third is followed by a separate ascent track, leaving behind the ski run. Shortly before you reach the top station of Mittelbergbahn, in the surroundings of Mittelbergjoch saddle, you reach the ski piste number 36 again. A last but pleasant ascent on the left edge of the ski run (seen from the valley) takes you to the top station of Mittelbergbahn. A very lovely route just perfect for slightly advanced ski touring fans.

Plodersee circuit

Start
Mandarfen (1673m)
Finish
Mandarfen (1675m)
Starting in Mandarfen, cross the bridge to the mountain rescue building and then turn right and follow the signposts to “Hirschtal / Rifflsee Lake”. The steep path leads through the Hirschtal valley up to Rifflsee Lake. The path continues just below the mountain restaurant Sunna Alm / top station Rifflsee gondola to the lake. Continue to run along the lakeshore to the Wurmtal valley and follow the signposts to Plodersee Lake. Past rushing mountain brooks and waterfalls follow the path until you reach the fork and then turn left to Plodersee Lake. Once there, do not descend via the steep ski slope but continue to run straight ahead following the markings, then follow the path down into the valley. Take care along a steep path (slip hazard) downhill and cross the Grubenkopf chairlift (only operational in winter) until you reach a fork, then follow signposts to the catered mountain hut Taschachalm down into the valley. Once there, it is an easy road back down to your starting point in Mandarfen.

Muttler Skyrun

Start
Mandarfen (1674m)
Finish
Mandarfen (1675m)
Starting in Mandarfen, cross the bridge to the mountain rescue building and then turn left and follow the agricultural road up to the catered mountain hut Taschachalm. Then turn left and follow the signpost to Mittelberg. High above the Taschach gorge, a narrow path leads through a forest. Still in the forest, above the “Gasthof Steinbock” restaurant follow the signpost in the direction of Mittagskogel. This steep trail leads through a forest at first but once you’ve reached the tree line you will be rewarded with fantastic panoramic views. Continue to run across mountain meadows and follow the well-marked trail across a boulder section. On your left you can already make out the ridge of the Muttler mountain ahead. Turn left at approximately 2,530 metres (note the small stone sculpture of a man) and follow the last 100 metres in elevation gain on a badly marked trail until you reach the ridge of the Muttler summit. Return on the same trail until you reach the signpost in the forest above Mittelberg. Then run in the direction of Gasthof Steinbock restaurant and past the bus turning area. Follow the panoramic trail at the head of the valley back to Mandarfen. Caution: the ascent up to the Muttler summit is very steep and the last 100 metres in altitude are poorly marked. However, once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with a fantastic view of the upper Pitztal valley!

After following the red road markings for approximately 500 metres turn left and walk uphill across rocky terrain towards the catered mountain hut Neubergalm. (Please note that you will have to be sure-footed and unafraid of heights for this section! However, you will be rewarded with beautiful views of the valley). After Neubergalm, a shaded trail leads through mixed woodland to the beautifully set catered mountain hut Tiefentalalm. Then you can choose to return on a trail via Wald or via the agricultural road past the viewing platform of the “Gschwandbach” waterfall towards Scheibe.
