Cross-country skiing is a fountain of youth for everyone!

There is hardly any other sport that strengthens muscles and is easy on your joints at the same time. Cross-country skiing is an ideal way of experiencing the beauty of the valley with its memorable snow-covered mountain scenery. Pitztal impresses with its diversity of cross-country ski runs: High altitude ski runs at Pitztal Glacier and Rifflsee, a 20km long track along the length of the valley, a network of cross-country tracks at Gachen Blick with varying degrees of difficulty and much more.
In total, there are 70,5 km of cross-country ski runs that will get every cross-country skier and nature fans’ heart beating faster.

Type of cross-country skiing trail: Classic



This is a rather demanding trail with set tracks for classic skiing and set skate skiing tracks in places. It meanders over 7.5 km in length through the partially thick forest areas. After approximately 2 km skiers reach a small clearing and the trail runs over a demanding ascent to the “Harbeweiher” pond. After a short loop around the frozen lake and a further ascent, the highest point of the cross-country skiing trail is reached. From there the trail again runs through dense forests back to the stating point. This cross-country skiing trail is ideal for nature lovers with adequate stamina. The nearby Nature Park Centre offers an interesting exhibition, culinary delicacies and also a cross-country skiing hire service (Classic skiing).

The valley cross-country skiing trail follows the Pitze river all along the bottom of the valley between the villages of Mittelberg and Wiese. The 21.3 km long trail has a set track for classic skiing and for skate skiing and can be skied in both directions. It is furthermore possible to access or exit the trail in any of the villages en route. The valley trail is a must for any cross-country skier visiting Pitztal, not only because it is excellently groomed but because of its magnificently scenic setting.

The starting point of this cross-country skiing trail can easily be accessed by using the ski and cross-country ski shuttle bus. Nestled in the snow secure high altitude of Piller, this so called fox moss [Fuchsmoos] cross-country skiing trail offers great variety. There are several options to shorten the circular route and the trail is therefore ideally suited for cross-country skiers of all abilities. The trail offers diverse scenery and runs though forests and meadows showing visitors the entire beauty and tranquility of the magnificent winter landscape of Kaunergrat nature park.

Cross-country center Pitztal Glacier

Starting point: Glacier Express, further to 6-seater chairlift

Altitude training: between 2,690 m and 2,740 m you can improve your stamina over 50 metres of elevation gain



Infrastructure and facilities: there are changing rooms and space to wax your cross-country skis as well as toilets at Mittelbergjoch railway station.



Open: start of the cross-country skiing season is around mid-September depending on snow and weather conditions. For further information please contact the glacier railway or Pitztal Tourism Association.

Course of the trail: Access via Glacier Express up to 2,840 m (please note that special tickets for hikers and cross-country skiers can be purchased). Once on the glacier you can reach the top station of the 6-seater chairlift in around 100 m. This chairlift will take you to the start of the glacier cross-country skiing trail. The access point is behind the bottom station of the the 8-seater gondola lift on 2,690 m and the trail runs in more or less even ascents up to its highest point at 2,740 m. The chairlift will comfortably return you to the mountain station of the Glacier Express.

You can easily reach the starting point of this cross-country skiing trail by using the ski or cross-country ski shuttle bus. This skate skiing trail starts directly next to the Pitzal country road (L16) and initially follows the Pitze river until the access road to Kienberg. Crossing a bridge you can reach the opposite side of the Pitze river and the trail then meanders in several loops around the many hay barns. The fishpond restaurant with its comfortable ambience is an inviting stop for refreshments.

 

Kitzgarten

The Kitzgarten circular route runs from Boden all along the valley cross-country skiing trail through the impressive Kitzgarten gorge. Turn around in Wiese to get back to your starting point in Boden.  

 

Neururer circular trail

After the start in Scheibe this cross-country skiing trail meanders along the waterfall circular route and then continues on the valley cross-country trail to Neurur. After a little loop return to your starting point via the same route. The impressive view of the frozen Klockele waterfall makes this trail a truly great “nature experience”.

 

Rifflsee trail

Type of cross-country skiing trail: Skate or classic skiing – Ideal high altitude training loop



Access this trail via Rifflsee mountain railway (return ticket) up to the top station. After accessing the cross-country skiing trail opposite the top station of the “Hirschtal drag lift” a slightly steeper stage of the trail runs downhill for approximately 300 m before you reach the actual cross-country ski trail. Once there, you can enjoy the magnificent panoramic views of Rifflsee on a classic or skate skiing track. Please don’t forget that you are skiing on a trail at an average of 2,250 m and will therefore tire more quickly than usual. For refreshments you can stop at the “Sunna Alm” or “Riffelseehütte“ mountain huts.

 

Valley head loop

Starting point: Mandarfen



Type of cross-country skiing trail: Skate skiing and classic skiing



As the name suggests this loop starts in Mandarfen and ends in Mittelberg at the end of the valley. After the start, this trail first follows the valley cross-country skiing trail to Mittelberg and then returns via a loop to the starting point.
