Sustainability in the Pitztal Valley
Austrian Eco-Label for Destinations – Pitztal

We are proud to hold the Austrian Ecolabel for Tourism Destinations. This means we are committed to adhering to a rigorous set of criteria for our region. The measures are regularly reviewed to ensure they are actually being implemented.
In early March 2025, we underwent the audit process for the Austrian Eco-Label for Tourism Destinations. Together with our partners and stakeholders in the region, we have demonstrated our commitment to sustainable and fair regional development.
Why aim for an eco-label for the Pitztal?
Sustainability in all its forms is a central component of today’s society. As a tourist destination, we see it as our duty to make our contribution and lead by example. The Austrian Eco-Label for Tourism Destinations is internationally recognised and is independently audited.
“The certification is not only a valuable recognition of our work to date, but also an important step on our journey to sustainably develop the Pitztal as a liveable and fair region.” – Pascal Tangl, Habitat Manager at TVB Pitztal

Energy – natural resources
The Pitztal valley is home to Europe’s highest-altitude photovoltaic power station at the Pitztal Glacier. The plant uses solar energy to generate electricity, covering 100 per cent of electricity demand in summer and one-third in winter. Using state-of-the-art technology, it contributes to the energy transition and reduces dependence on fossil fuels. In addition, the Pitztal relies on hydropower: in St. Leonhard there is a hydroelectric power station that utilises the natural flow of the rivers to generate electricity. Another hydroelectric power station is located in Jerzens, where the power of water is also utilised efficiently. This combination of photovoltaic and hydroelectric power demonstrates the Pitztal valley’s strong commitment to renewable energy and a sustainable future.

Culture and Tradition (Living Tradition)

Historic sights and lovingly crafted artefacts bear witness to this past. Young and old alike are working together to preserve these traditions. Special events such as the mountain bonfire in early summer, the cattle drive in autumn and the traditional carnival celebrations bring the cultural heritage of the valley to life.
