Circular route: Piller pond – Aifner Alm – Kreuzjöchl – Kielebergalm

From the starting point turn left on a path in the direction of Lachwies. From the Lachwies farm onwards a steep footpath continues steeply downhill to Bärenbad. Once there, follow a forest road for a short while before turning right into a well signposted trail to the catered mountain hut Aifner Alm. After the Alm, turn left in the direction of Aifenspitze summit, turn left at Schweinelieger and walk uphill to the Kreuzjöchl on a path that is very steep in places. Continue to hike downhill through the Wildkar combe and on a path towards the catered mountain hut Kielebergalm. Finally return to Piller the forest road. 

Trail to the Kaunergrathütte (2,817 m)

Starting point: car park just before Plangeroß. Walk by a path, which starts off wide before narrowing and becoming increasingly steep – through the forest to the Plangeroßalpe. Once there, cross over the river at two points, continuing next to ascend on the moderately steep path along the river to the second plateau, where the path is joined by a high-level trail, the Cottbuser Höhenweg. From there, follow the trail over loose stones and rocks to the last very steep ascent of the route up to one of the highest catered mountain huts of the Ötztal Alps, the Kaunergrathütte (2,817 m). Descend by the outward route. For experienced and fit mountaineers, there is an alternative descent from the Kaunergrathütte via the Mittelberglesee lake to Trenkwald (this alter -native descent adds another 2 hrs walking time to the high Alpine trek). 

Tip: From the Kaunergrathütte, within about an hour, you can also climb the summit 
to enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the Plangeroßkopf. Grade: moderate

Hike to Aifner Alm and Aifenspitzen

From the starting point, take a forest path left in the direction of a pond [Harbeweiher]. The forest path reaches a steep trail, which you continue to follow, keeping to the right. Just before the Harbeweiher, take a left turn. Continue to walk on this trail to the catered mountain hut Aifner Alm. Once there, turn off left via a well-prepared steep path until you reach the Schweinelieger summit. From there, keep right and walk along the ridge to the Aifenspitze summit. Please note: only cross over to the Hohen Aifenspitze peak if you are sure-footed and an experienced mountaineer. Return by the same route you came on.

Krabichl - Leiner Alm - Sechszeiger - Kalbenalm - Krabichl

The start of the walk is at the hamlet Krabichl between Leins and Wald. Follow the forest path on the right to the next fork. Then follow the forest road in the direction of the Hilterboden Chapel. The forest road leads to a steep path up to the catered mountain hut Leiner Alm. Just overlooking Leiner Alm a path forks off to the left in the direction of Leiner Kögele/Sechzeiger. Return from Sechzeiger down to the catered mountain huts Kalbenalm and then on to Leineralm. From there, return via a forest road back down to your starting point in Krabichl.

3 summits circuit

This trail starts off at the Piller fishpond car park and then follows to the catered mountain hut Gogles Alm on the same route as the Galflun Alm circuit. But once there the “3 summits circuit” forks off and follows a steep uphill path in the direction of Glanderspitze summit. Once there the slightly cropped path follows along the Venet mountain ridge all the way to the Kreuzjochspitze summit. A slightly steeper path leads downhill to a forest road, which then continues on to Gaflun Alm. To descend follow the trail just in front of the mountain hut in the direction of Piller, with the last section following a comfortable forest road back to your starting point. 

Circular route: Klausboden/Forstgarten - Kielebergalm - Aifnerspitze – Aifner Alm

From the starting point you walk along the forest path to the catered mountain hut Kielebergalm. Continue on a path, at times steep, through Wildkar cirque until you reach a fork, turn off to the right in the direction of the Schweinelieger peak. Once there, you may either take a right to walk straight to the catered mountain hut Aifner Alm or a left to climb the Kleine Aifnerspitze peak (very nice vista). Return by the same route to the Schweinelieger and descend on a well-signposted steep path to the Aifner Alm. From there, a 
waymarked steep path joins with a forest road. After a few meters on the forest road turn right to walk on a steep path in the direction of the Harbeweiher pond/Bärenbad. At the pond, take a right to return via Lachwies to Piller/Forstgarten.

Mittelberg – Braunschweiger Hütte (2,759 m) – Pitztaler Jöchl (2,995 m) – Mittelberg

From there, follow the flat and even agricultural road to the catered mountain hut Gletscherstube. Keeping left, start the ascent to the catered mountain hut Braunschweiger Hütte. The steep and rocky so called Wasserfallsteig [waterfall trail] leads along the icefall of the Glacier steeply uphill to the foot of the waterfall of the Mittelbergferner Glacier. From there, a painstaking and very steep uphill climb over difficult, partly rocky terrain takes you to the hut. The fantastic views you will enjoy of the surrounding Glacier environment amply compensate your exertions on this arduous path. Continue to walk up to the Pitztaler Jöchl summit via a very well-kept trail to enjoy spectacular scenic views of the surrounding summits and Glaciers. Return back to the valley on the outward route. Please note that this route is only suitable for fit and sure-footed mountaineers! 
Take the same way back.

Three lake tour (Brechsee,Krummersee,Kugletersee)

Follow the agricultural road from Rehwald to the catered mountain hut Mauchele Alm. From there turn off on a trail towards Lake Brechsee which you will reach within 1 hour from the hut. It is another 1 hour 30 minutes walk to Lake Krummersee. After 50 minutes you reach the Lake Kugletersee. Return to the start via the same route. 

St Leonharder Höhenweg (high-level trail)

Follow the well-marked agricultural road to the catered mountain hut Ludwigsburger Hütte. Then continue to walk to the Lehnerjoch and turn right after approx. 10 minutes and follow the well-waymarked track southwards. After crossing a few cirques and streams, follow a steep, secured descent to another cirque, the Hairlacher Kar. Next, climb up the steep track (secured with ropes) to the stunning Mauerköpfl summit. Continue to walk over Alpine pastures beneath the Hairlacher Seekopf summit to the fork a little east of the Am Gampen. Then climb uphill in the direction of the Wilder See until you reach the Brandsee lake at the same altitude as the Schoaßkogel peak. At another cirque, the Biedere Kar, continue to walk on to the so called Luibisböden. It is possible to descend via the Luibisalm to Piösmes.

Please note that no one should attempt this Alpine trek unless confident of good fitness levels and stamina.

E5 Alternative hiking route along the valley: Scheibe – Braunschweiger Hütte

From your starting point follow the valley hiking trail [Talwanderweg] into the valley to Mittelberg. This is an easy hike along the bottom of the valley. From Mittelberg the hike will get more difficult. Follow the agricultural road in the direction of the catered mountain hut Gletscherstube for the last 1,000 metres in altitude. The road then leads to a steep path up to the catered mountain hut Braunschweiger Hütte.
