Valley hiking trail with e-handbike

Start
Mandarfen (1679m)
Finish
Wiese (1177m)
Hike with E-Handbike: The valley hiking trail from Mandarfen to Wiese (ca. 22 km) can be navigated either by electric handbike or sections of it by Swiss-Trac. If you are using an electric handbike, we would advise to start in Mandarfen and take the route out of the valley. The route is overall challenging as it repeatedly features steep inclines and varied terrain. There are several sections through grazing pastures. We would recommend the following sections for Swiss-Trac users:
  • Mandarfen and Neurur (ca. 6 km)
  • Stillebach and Eggenstall (ca. 4 km)
  • Enger and Wiese (ca. 5 km)
You can choose start and end points in any of the villages and hamlets of St Leonhard within these three sections.

Circular route Pitzenhöfe

Start
Wenns Parkplatz Kirche/Mehrzwecksaal (976m)
Finish
Wenns Parkplatz Kirche/Mehrzwecksaal (983m)
Swiss-Trac Tour:
Please note that we recommend starting this circular route from Wenns in the direction of St Margarethen, as the forest path is very steep the opposite way around and in wet conditions assistance is required even when using the Swiss-Trac.
The route starts in Wenns following the pavement along the main road until reaching St Margarethen. After passing the M-Preis supermarket leave the main road and turn left into a side street. After ca. 500 metres the street enters a forest path. Depending on weather conditions, the surface of the path can be slippery, and especially the first section of the route is steep. Now follow an easily manageable downhill path through a forest for 1.5 km. There is a bridge after the woodland. Keep left and follow the tarmac road back to the centre of Wenns.

Alte Straße from Wenns to Arzl

Start
Hinter dem Pitztaler Hof (1003m)
Finish
Abzw. Timmls (936m)
Swiss-Trac Tour: Please note that we recommend starting this route from Wenns in the direction of Arzl, as there is a steep forest section the opposite way around. Return via Regiobus shuttle bus.
Start this route in Wenns (if possible, park behind Pitztaler Hof). From there, the first kilometre is a steady uphill climb on a tarmac road in between houses. You will then reach a forest road with a central grass verge so that only the narrow tracks either side are drivable. The next kilometre continues to be a steady uphill climb, in parts through a forested area and always with beautiful views of the valley. The last part of this route is a steep downhill section where the path is, in parts, hard to navigate. You will then get back to the road where you will find the bus stop.

Finish
Feuerwehrhaus Jerzens (1120m)

Taschachhaus circuit

Start
Mandarfen (1679m)
Finish
Mandarfen (1673m)
Starting in Mandarfen, initially cross the bridge to the mountain rescue building and then turn left and follow the agricultural road up to the Taschachalm. Once there continue to run on the right hand side on the path leading up to Rifflsee Lake until a path forks off on the left. Instead of continuing up to Rifflseee, turn left and run via the Fuldaer high-level trail to the catered mountain hut Taschachhaus. Once there, it is a steep descent down across the glacier moraine passing the bottom station of the goods cable lift and on to the agricultural road at the bottom of the Taschach valley back to the Taschachalm. Return via the same route to the starting point in Mandarfen. Caution: This is a very long trail of over 20 kilometres! It can be shortened by descending at the Fuldaer high-level trail back down to the Taschach valley, but please note that the path leading downhill can be easily overlooked.

Kaunergrat Trail – extreme trail

Start
Mandarfen (1679m)
Finish
Trenkwald (1502m)
Staring in Mandarfen, follow the agricultural road down the river to Plangeross. Once there, there is a steep ascent past the non-catered Plangeroß Alm vorbei, to the catered mountain hut Kaunergrathütte (2,817 m). Once there, continue to run in a North-Easterly direction to the Steinbockjoch, the highest point of this tour at 2,950 metres. Then continue passing a mountain lake and on to “auf den Sassen”. Then turn left to the emerald green Mittelerglesee Lake and once you’ve passed the lake turn right and run downhill in the direction of Neururer Alpe/Trenkwald and NOT up to the Verpeiljoch! Follow the alpine brook down the valley, then run along the “Almenweg” until you reach Neururer Alpe. Once there, follow the steep path down the valley to Trenkwald. Take the bus (or run an extra 5 km) to get back to your starting point in Mandarfen.   Caution: this is a very demanding and long trail with an ascent of almost 3,000 metres. It is absolutely essential to carry full equipment!

Large Venet circuit

Start
Plattenrain (1478m)
Finish
Plattenrain (1474m)
This “Queen’s stage” is the same route to the Kreuzjochspitze as described in the “Kreuzjoch circuit” but then follows along the Venet ridge via the Wannejöchl, the Glanderspitze and almost to the top station of the Venet mountain railway. Once there, follow a path to the catered mountain huts Gogles Alm, Galflun and Larcher Alms and on to the Venet Alm. Return to your starting point via the same path as on your way up. The Large Venet circuit passes four summit crosses and four catered mountain huts – making this circuit an extra special experience.

Wildgrat Trail

Start
Middel station (2024m)
Finish
Valley station (1468m)
Run from the intermediate station via a path past the alpine pasture Kalbenalm towards the summit Sechszeiger. Folow from the mountain ridge towards Hochzeiger and by the Niederjöchl turn left and run downhill to the junction towards the alpine pasture Erlangerhütte. Past the Hinterer Sea Lake on your right. Follow the markings uphill in the direction of Wildgrat. The trail on this uphill cross boulder section is marked by red dots. Follow the markings all the way to the ridge. Once there you have the option to run on to the Wildgrat summit cross, but please note that you have to be surefooted and unafraid of heights in order to do this! Otherwise, follow the markings downhill in the direction of the intermediate station past the Großsee Lake on your left. At the next fork you have the option to run via the Hochzeiger summit or via the Obere and Untere Goaßsteig to the Zollkreuz (option to return to intermediate station). At the Zollkreuz junction continue to run in the direction of Zollberg (2.225m). From then on, it’s all downhill via a single trail to the forest road until you reach the valley lift station in Liss.

Stage without summit – Day 4: Vari. III Piösmes – Mandarfen

Start
Piösmes (1388m)
Finish
Mandarfen (1677m)
Starting point district Piösmes: Go back to Scheibe and then follow a forest road, then a steep forest path until you reach the catered mountain hut Arzler Alm. Afterwards follow a wide forest road for ca. 1 kilometre until you are beneath the Rappenkopf summit, then turn off onto a steep trail in a southerly direction. Follow this uphill trail until you reach another fork after approximately 500 metres and again turn in a southerly direction. Here the high-level trail, built in 2012 starts, which will remain on approximately the same level between 2,000 m and 2,400m beneath the Seirlöcherkogel summit and in the direction of Neururer Berg. Along this section there are several fantastic viewing points in the direction of Mandarfen or the Mittagskogel summit and Pitztal’s glaciers. After a walking time of approximately 4 hours you will reach Neururer Berg mountain and then follow a shaded forest trail downhill towards Trenkwald. Follow the signposts to Plangeroß via the Pitztal Bike trail. And then follow the valley hiking trail to Mandarfen.
