Ferner Route - Red

Start
Glacier Restaurant (2684m)
Finish
Top station Mittelbergbahn (Gondola) (3278m)
Access:
From the Glacier Restaurant at the top station of Pitztal's Gletscherexpress via a short downhill stretch on ski piste number 25 to Gletschersee base station of Mittelbergbahn. The ascent route starts right at the base station next to the signpost.

Characteristics and Description:
Red Piste – Intermediate ski tour along the ski run
From the starting point at the Gletschersee chair lift base station you keep to the left edge of the ski run (seen from the valley) on ski piste number 36. Right at the start, close to the base station, there is a very tricky narrow section covering about 50 meters. Watch out for oncoming sportspeople. After another 500-meter stretch the ascent route travels along the ski piste number 36. A moderately climbing section in the lower third is followed by a separate ascent track, leaving behind the ski run. Shortly before you reach the top station of Mittelbergbahn, in the surroundings of Mittelbergjoch saddle, you reach the ski piste number 36 again. A last but pleasant ascent on the left edge of the ski run (seen from the valley) takes you to the top station of Mittelbergbahn. A very lovely route just perfect for slightly advanced ski touring fans.

Stage without summit – Day 3: Wiese – Piösmes

Start
Arzl (1189m)
Finish
Wenns (1403m)
Starting point Wiese: Approximately 100 metres before the hamlet Wiese, follow the agricultural road to the
catered mountain hut Söllbergalm. Once there, a trail leads on through larch and pine forests on a continuously steep trail in the direction of Lake Brechsee. After a 30 minute walk, turn off in the direction of Stallkogel – Mauchele Alm. Then you will come across a newly built, moderately steep trail starting at the catered mountain hut Mauchele Alm. After following the red road markings for approximately 500 metres turn left and walk uphill across rocky terrain towards the catered mountain hut Neubergalm. (Please note that you will have to be sure-footed and unafraid of heights for this section! However, you will be rewarded with beautiful views of the valley). After Neubergalm, a shaded trail leads through mixed woodland to the beautifully set catered mountain hut Tiefentalalm. Then you can choose to return on a trail via Wald or via the agricultural road past the viewing platform of the “Gschwandbach” waterfall towards Scheibe. The agricultural road in Scheibe takes you back to Piösmes.

Stage without summit – Day 5: Mandarfen – Mandarfen

Start
Mandarfen (1674m)
Finish
Mandarfen (1674m)
Starting point Mandarfen: The trail leads through the Hirschtal valley up to Lake Rifflsee. Once there, follow the high-level trail signposted as “Offenbacher Höhenweg” . Keep an eye out for a fork and the Lake Plodersee signpost and then follow a continuously steep trail up to Lake Plodersee. Once there, follow the “Fuldaer” high-level trail, which is moderately steep, sometimes up and sometimes down. Cross several streams until you reach the only critical point of this trail – the “Vordere Köpfl”. There are rocky and steep sections to master here, however, the path is safely secured with steel ropes and can be accomplished as long as you are surefooted. From then on it is a steady downhill climb to the cirque [Kar] and then a little further uphill to the catered mountain hut Taschachhaus. Catch a fantastic glimpse of the Taschach glacier world from a viewing point on the mountain’s crest just above the mountain hut. It is advisable to return via the moderately steep agricultural road to the Taschach Alm mountain hut and then further on to Mandarfen.
